Torres (BBVA) proposes that Spain be an exporter of energy to Europe

MADRID, 25 May. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The president of BBVA, Carlos Torres, has called for Spain to use its renewable resources to be an energy exporter to Europe and has appreciated that the country has already taken many measures aimed at decarbonizing the economy, although he believes that the focus should be in removing barriers to its implementation.

Speaking from the World Economic Forum in Davos (Switzerland), the manager pointed out that the meeting in which he is participating comes at "one of the most challenging moments in recent decades", with the invasion of Ukraine by Russia in a moment of recovery from the Covid-19 crisis.

As he pointed out, governments and companies are debating how to address the challenges arising from the situation, starting with "the great human tragedy", although he has also highlighted that the fight against climate change is also a priority.

"Europe's response capacity in the face of aggression would have been much greater if we had had a more decarbonized economy and perhaps Russia's actions would also have been very different", stated the BBVA chairman, who highlighted the fact that Europe is has set "very ambitious" goals that must become a reality.

To do this, he has pointed to the importance of taking measures that facilitate the deployment, above all, of "already proven technologies that are already very profitable", such as the electrification of the economy, renewables and energy efficiency.

However, he lamented that banks often witness interesting projects being delayed for many years. "Spain has taken many measures in the right direction, we have to continue on this path, ensure that they work in practice. In Spain we have a great advantage, we have the energy resource of the future, renewable: wind, sun, the new oil, and we can be exporters of energy to Europe", he maintained.

Thus, Torres has ensured that Spain can play "a very relevant role" in the search for energy autonomy in Europe, for which he has called for focusing on eliminating the barriers to its implementation.

"At BBVA we are fully committed to financing the transition to a sustainable world and there is not a minute to lose," he stressed.
