Thousands of people protest in Tirana against the socialist government of Albania

MADRID, 8 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Thousands of supporters of the right-wing opposition in Albania have protested this Thursday in the capital, Tirana, against the country's socialist government led by Prime Minister Edi Rama.

The mobilization, led by the leader of the opposition, Sali Berisha, took place in front of the government headquarters. There, the protesters have called for the resignation of Rama, whom they have accused of robbing Albanians, corruption and "authoritarian behavior", as reported by 'Albanian Daily News'.

Among the reasons for the protests are the sharp rises in prices, including fuel prices, as well as the lack of jobs and opportunities for the citizens of Albania.

This is the first protest in which Berisha has participated since he retaken power from the Albanian Democratic Party (PD) in May this year, just five months after the organization's leadership expelled him, according to 'Gazeta Shqiptare'.

Berisha, 77, was the first person to hold the office of president of Albania democratically in 1992. He later served as prime minister from 2005 to 2013.

During his time as Albania's prime minister, Berisha has been accused by his critics of corruption, having links to organized crime and suppressing the country's media.
