The UN General Assembly rejects a secret vote proposed by Russia on annexations in Ukraine

MADRID, 11 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Russia has not obtained the necessary votes to secretly carry out the vote on a resolution on Russian annexations in Ukraine in the UN General Assembly after the majority of members of said assembly have been against it.

Specifically, an Albanian proposal for the resolution to be voted on openly has gone ahead with 107 votes in favor, 13 against and 39 abstentions, the UN reported in a statement.

The Albanian representative to the UN General Assembly has argued that holding such a vote in secret would be a "dangerous precedent" if a vote is taken on such a substantive issue of peace and security without each country making public its point of view. view.

The vote that Russia intended to hold in secret is a US-led condemnation of Russia's annexation of four regions of eastern Ukraine following referendums held on September 23-27.

Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vasili Nebenzia, has criticized the UN General Assembly's decision not to allow a secret vote on the resolution on Ukraine.

"My reaction is that it was an outrageous manipulation on behalf of the General Assembly that I had never seen during my tenure here," Nebezna told reporters, according to the TASS agency.

Russia had already campaigned in advance for the vote to be secret, apparently hoping for a better result.

Unlike the Security Council, the resolutions of the UN General Assembly are not binding under International Law. The next one will suffice only as a global test of sentiment towards the Ukraine war on the part of member states.
