The UN special coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wennesland, has expressed concern about the increase in Israeli military operations in the occupied area of the West Bank, while at least 100 Palestinians have lost their lives as a result of these clashes since the beginning of the year.
"I am alarmed by the deteriorating security situation, including the increase in armed clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem," he said in an official statement.
In addition, Wennesland has denounced that during the same period "16 Israelis have been killed inside Israel in a wave of terrorist attacks by Palestinians and Israeli Arabs."
The United Nations office has also pointed out that the growing violence is fueling a climate of fear, hatred and anger. "It is crucial to reduce tensions immediately to open the space for crucial initiatives aimed at establishing a viable political horizon," he said.
Wennesland has urged the Israeli and Palestinian authorities to restore calm and prevent further escalation, an objective for which, he recalled, he is actively collaborating.
"The fragility of the situation underscores the urgency of changing the dynamics on the ground, while addressing the underlying political and security issues that are fueling the current instability," he said.
