The president of the Russian Duma warns of the "danger" for Sweden and Finland if NATO opens new bases

MADRID, 4 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The president of the Russian State Duma, Viacheslav Volodin, warned on Monday that the opening of NATO bases in Sweden and Finland "would endanger" the population of these countries, within the framework of the Stockholm accession process. and Helsinki to the Atlantic Alliance.

"In the event of hostilities, there would be bombing mainly against the enemy's military infrastructure. Placing NATO bases will not protect Finland or Sweden. On the contrary," he explained in a message on his Telegram account.

Thus, he stated that "the mayor of Lappeenranta, in Finland, has offered to host a NATO base in his city." "In his opinion, this will generate security. He is wrong," he stressed.

In this sense, Volodin has emphasized that the opening of these Alliance bases "will endanger the inhabitants of the cities in which this military infrastructure is installed."

Volodin himself stated last week that NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg "didn't study geography" and noted that an expansion of NATO implies "more Russia on its borders."

The heads of state and government of NATO formally agreed on June 29 to invite Finland and Sweden to become members of the Atlantic Alliance, one day after Turkey lifted the veto after the trilateral memorandum signed in the framework of the summit of Madrid.
