The PP asks Sánchez to clarify if Spain is not in the anti-missile shield so as not to create "instability with its partners"

Monago presents a battery of questions in the Senate for the Executive to explain why Spain has been left out of that project

The deputy spokesman for the Popular Group in the Senate, José Antonio Monago, has presented a battery of written questions in the Senate asking the Government for clarifications about why Spain has been left out of the European anti-missile shield. Specifically, he asks to know, among other questions, if he has not participated so as "not to cause instability with his partners."

The party led by Alberto Núñez Feijóo has already demanded the appearance in Congress of the Defense Minister, Margarita Robles, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, so that they explain why Spain has not joined when Germany "has already made it clear that it did offer Spain participation in this project," Secretary General Cuca Gamarra said on Tuesday.

For this reason, Monago summons the Government in its written questions, to which Europa Press has had access, to clarify whether or not "it has been invited to participate in the anti-missile shield proposed by the German Government", after assuring it "that Spain was invited and the Defense Minister pointed out that it was not."

Monago, who is also chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, recalled that 14 NATO member countries, in addition to Finland, have declared themselves in favor of participating in the development of an anti-missile shield to protect their space from "an eventual Russian threat.

As he added, this initiative promoted by Germany aims to create an air and missile defense system through the common acquisition of equipment by European nations in order to "strengthen NATO's integrated air and anti-missile defense".

The Extremaduran senator of the PP has expressly asked the Executive if "Spain's non-participation in the anti-missile shield promoted by Germany" is due to not causing instability with its government partners, rather than the real needs of prevention in terms of defense that it needs the country".

The PP senator has alluded to the words of the Defense Minister assuring that Spain will not participate in this project because he understands that "participation in NATO is the precedent". In any case, he asks if the Government is going to assess the German Government's proposal on the creation of an anti-missile shield or discard it on the understanding that the area "already enjoys that protection".

It also asks the Executive if it agrees with the French Government's assertion that "promoting Germany's anti-missile shield could jeopardize Europe's strategic sovereignty, given the Israeli origin of the systems".

In addition, he asks to know if the Government understands, unlike the Government of Germany, that the NATO anti-missile shield has no security gaps against ballistic missiles. In fact, he summons Robles to clarify whether he "has objective data on the absence of such gaps."

Finally, Monago urges the Executive to clarify "how many anti-missile launch platforms the Spanish Ministry of Defense has, knowing that Germany currently has twelve", and "what anti-missile system of the ICBM (Inter Continental Ballistic Missile) type Spain account".
