The Iranian Parliament, the Majlis, met this Sunday behind closed doors to discuss the social crisis that the country is going through after the death of a young woman in custody of the so-called "morality police" who have questioned the use of the veil in the Islamic republic and triggered a wave of protests that would have already left at least fifty dead.

Before the closing of the doors, the president of the Parliament, Mohamad Baqer Qalibaf, has recognized that the intention of this session is to alter the ways and conduct of the Iranian religious police.

"The structures and methods of the morality police must be modified so that such as this does not happen again. I will follow up on this within my jurisdiction and hope that prudent and effective decisions will be made in coordination with related officials," he declared.

However, and in these comments collected by the Mehr agency, Qalibaf has again accused "subversive elements" of fueling the protests and asked the population to act in favor of "a specific objective" instead of fueling social discord.

"Attention must be paid to the fact that inciting people to confront each other is an act of weakening social cohesion that is in favor of the enemy's will," he said.
