The impact of the war on food stars at the meeting in Santiago of the European Committee of the Regions

SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA, 2 Jun. (EUROPE PRESS) -

Starting this Thursday morning, Santiago de Compostela will host a meeting of the Natural Resources Commission (NAT) of the European Committee of the Regions, which will focus on the impact of the war in Ukraine on the food sector.

This is the second time that Galicia hosts an external meeting of this community body, which is holding the third meeting of the year at the Cidade da Cultura, where 70 local and regional representatives meet, including presidents of regions such as La Puglia (Italy), Kuyavia-Pomerania (Poland) and Brittany (France).

The person in charge of opening the meeting – which will last until the month of November – was the Chief Executive of Foreign Affairs and the European Union, Jesús Gamallo, who encouraged the assistants to get to know Galicia this Xacobeo 21-22.

"Galicia wants to renew with this important meeting of the European Committee of the Rexions outside its usual headquarters in Brussels, its commitment to a strong Europe, which is the one that offers a response to the challenges arising from the post-pandemic crisis, from the consequences of the war in Ukraine or climate change," Gamallo stressed.

"We are perfectly aligned with the great priorities defined by the European Commission in favor of a green, fair transition, digitization and demographic change", remarked the person in charge of external action of the Xunta.

The preparation of an opinion on the review of the geographical indications system has focused the work of the natural resources commission, according to a statement from the Xunta issued after the opening of the day.

The objective is to establish the position of the Committee of the Regions on the ways to define an agriculture with low carbon emissions or how to guarantee food security and the resilience of the European system.

The opinions of the commission - one of the six that make up the committee - will establish the position of the European regions and municipalities in the open debate within the European Union on the conflict in Ukraine and its impact on the agri-food market.
