The Government sends to the Cortes the protocol for the accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO

MADRID, 1 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Council of Ministers has approved this Monday the agreement that provides for the referral to the Cortes Generales of the Protocol to the North Atlantic Treaty (NATO) on the accession of Sweden and Finland, while also including the expression of consent of Spain to the decision.

The signing of the Swedish and Finnish accession protocol took place in Brussels on July 5, 2022 and Spain ratified it that same day after being authorized by the Council of Ministers.

However, the Council of State in its opinion of July 21, 2022, determined that the provision of the State's consent "requires prior authorization."

For this reason, the Government has requested that the authorization procedure of the General Courts be carried out by the urgent procedure. To date, Canada, Iceland, Norway, Denmark and the United Kingdom have completed the process of ratifying this protocol.
