The Government rejects criticism for raising the salary of politicians: Some would like there to be only rich people

MADRID, 5 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Minister of Finance, María Jesús Montero, has defended that the salary increase agreed for civil servants should also be applied to political representatives, be they members of the Government or deputies and senators, and believes that criticism from parties such as PP, Vox and Citizens are framed in "anti-politics": They would like only the rich to have political representation.

While waiting to know the details of the budgets regarding the Government's salary, it has already transpired that deputies and senators will have a 3.5% rise in 2023, in line with the forecast for officials. That decision was rejected in Congress by PP and Vox and also Ciudadanos has spoken out against it.

In the corridors of Congress, when asked about the salary increase for public officials at a time of crisis, the minister questioned the "anti-political" discourse that, in her opinion, aims to give the impression that "what politicians are paid and everything what goes into their work is money misused.

In his opinion, they are speeches by political formations that would like "only the rich to have political representation, those who can pay for it by birth or birth."
