The Government avoids assessing Meloni's victory although it admits "concern" about statements in the campaign

He trusts that the future Italian Government agrees with the "philosophy" of the European project

MADRID, 27 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The government spokesperson, Isabel Rodríguez, has avoided assessing the victory of Giorgia Meloni's far-right party in Italy, beyond acknowledging that it has been imposed in a legitimate process, but has admitted "concern" about some of the statements made during the election campaign.

Rodríguez has transferred a "message of recognition" on behalf of the Government to the "democratic process in which the Italians have freely and legitimately elected" their future Government, emphasizing that this election is up to them.

"It is not up to us to assess whether we like this government more or less, which is also about to finish conforming," he recalled, since although the results of Sunday's elections are already known, Meloni has not yet been commissioned to form Cabinet of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella.

However, when asked at the press conference after the Council of Ministers about Meloni's victory and the implications at a European level that it may have, she did not want to hide "concern about some of the statements that we have heard during the electoral campaign" regarding cuts or setbacks in women's rights or in migration policy and that are not consistent with the European model.

"We are a pro-European country, we defend the European framework", the spokeswoman recalled, stressing that this involves "defense of democracy, freedom, diversity and plurality and we hope that the formation of this government (in Italy) responds to that philosophy of the European project".
