The EU condemns the new coup in Burkina Faso and asks to respect the commitments made

MADRID, 1 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The EU has expressed this Saturday its condemnation of the new coup perpetrated on Friday in Burkina Faso by a dissident faction of the Army, the second in less than a year in the African country, which has annulled all the preliminary agreements reached between the previous junta military and the international community to restore a civilian government in the country.

"The European Union denounces the new coup d'état in Burkina Faso, which endangers the efforts undertaken for several months, in particular by the Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to supervise the transition", the EU has indicated in a statement attributed to the High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell.

Thus, Brussels calls for "compliance with the commitments made, which formed the basis of the agreement reached with ECOWAS on July 3, in order to support Burkina Faso towards free and transparent national elections before July 1, 2024" .

The EU also "deplores the deteriorating security and humanitarian situation in the country and stands by the people of Burkina Faso in these difficult times."

The military, led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the country's new strongman, have defended the coup in the face of discontent in the country due to the insecurity caused by jihadist terrorism.

"Spain reiterates its commitment to the fight against terrorism and other causes of instability in the Sahel, as well as to socioeconomic development for the benefit of the populations of the region," concludes the Foreign Affairs note.
