The Austrian president, favorite to revalidate the position in the elections this Sunday

VIENNA, 9 Oct. (DPA/EP) -

The president of Austria, Alexander van der Bellen, starts as the undisputed favorite in the presidential elections this Sunday in Austria, where he aspires to revalidate what would be his second term in office.

The current head of state needs half of the votes to be directly granted a new six-year term. However, if none of the seven candidates achieves an absolute majority, a second round will be held between the two with the most votes.

"I hope of course that it ends well, that we already have clarity today," declared the 78-year-old president, casting his vote in Vienna. In his opinion, a second round would simply mean waiting another four weeks to obtain the desired result.

Van der Bellen, a former leader of the Green Party, has the support of all Austrian parliamentary parties except the far-right Austrian Freedom Party (FPO).

Last month, polls gave Van der Bellen the support of nearly two-thirds of the electorate, ahead of the FPO's candidate, Walter Rosenkranz.
