Siemens Gamesa signs a supply agreement with wpd for an offshore wind farm in Germany

MADRID, 4 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy announced this Monday the signing of a framework supply agreement with the German developer wpd for the Gennaker offshore wind farm, located about 15 kilometers off the German coast and with a capacity of 927 megawatts (MW).

The agreement with wpd includes, according to the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV), a 20-year service contract. Siemens Gamesa has detailed that the Gennaker wind farm will have "103 Siemens Gamesa Direct Drive offshore wind turbines", which have a 167-meter rotor and a capacity of 8.6 MW that can be extended up to 9 MW "thanks to the PowerBoost functionality ".

The agreement is subject to certain conditions, including confirmation of the date of connection to the network, which is expected in the second half of 2023, as detailed by the company in a statement.

"The signing of this agreement with wpd is excellent news as it is one of the largest planned offshore parks in the Baltic Sea. Our strong collaboration will be reinforced by the deployment of our proven offshore technology. In addition, we will contribute to the achievement of the ambitious objectives of the German Government in terms of offshore wind energy", said the CEO of the Offshore Business Unit of Siemens Gamesa, Marc Becker.

At the end of 2021, the German government increased its targets for offshore development to 30 gigawatts (GW) in 2030, while the targets for 2035 and 2045 were also raised to 40 GW and 70 GW, respectively.

Gennaker will be the fifth joint project of Siemens Gamesa and wpd given that they have also collaborated in the development of the Butendiek wind farms, of 288 MW, in Germany and inaugurated in 2015; Yunlin, of 640 MW, in Taiwan and currently in the installation phase; Fécamp, 498 MW, and Courseulles-sur mer 448 MW, both in France and in preparation for installation in the coming years.
