Russia accuses Western countries of wanting to split the UN General Assembly

Proposes a secret ballot so that member countries can express their opinion without fear of reprisals

MADRID, 13 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Russia has accused Western countries on Thursday of wanting a division in the United Nations General Assembly after the body rejected by 143 votes in favor and five against the Russian annexation of four regions of eastern Ukraine.

"The West is trying, first of all, to solve its own geopolitical problems vis-à-vis Russia, to maintain an elusive monopoly in world affairs, to divide various member states of the General Assembly," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. release.

In this sense, Moscow has argued that this "confrontational" initiative does not seek "a peaceful settlement" in the region, but rather "delay the conflict in Ukraine." "There is no doubt that this resolution, contrary to its name, has nothing to do with protecting the principles of the UN Charter," he added.

For this reason, he has defended a secret vote so that any member country "can get to express its true position without fear of the consequences of its 'wrong' decisions", an option that, according to Moscow, has been rejected due to "uncontrollable maneuvers". scruples".

Russia has also turned the spotlight on the United States, re-assuring that Washington "is willing to use force to protect Taiwan," which violates China's integrity. Another example given by Moscow is the independence of Kosovo, defended by Western countries despite "the absence of a real threat to the civilian population."

"The declarations of commitment to international law by the United States and other NATO countries are nothing more than evidence of double standards," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement collected by the TASS news agency.

Only five countries -- North Korea, Syria, Nicaragua, Belarus and Russia -- have voted against the UN resolution entitled "Territorial Integrity of Ukraine: Upholding the Principles of the UN Charter."

Another 35 countries have abstained, including India, China, Cuba, Pakistan and several African nations, who have been criticized since the start of the war for showing lukewarm condemnation of Russian aggression.

The resolution has been sponsored by up to 70 countries, in addition to Ukraine itself: all member states of the European Union, Australia, Georgia, South Korea, Moldova, Montenegro, Cambodia, the United Kingdom, Burma, several Latin American and other Pacific nations. .
