Robles acknowledges concern about Putin's intervention and insists that Ukraine must be supported to seek peace

MADRID, 21 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Defense Minister, Margarita Robles, has recognized that the intervention on Tuesday by the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, has generated concern because he states "that he has no interest in achieving peace", for which he has insisted that the best way to deal with it is by supporting Ukraine.

"There is only one person responsible for the war and it is Putin," Robles stressed after the Russian president pointed to the West as the culprit in the war and announced the suspension of Russian participation in the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty ( START), the last pact signed with the United States for the reduction and control of nuclear weapons.

"Today's intervention by Putin leaves us all absolutely concerned, it shows that he has no interest in achieving peace, but quite the opposite," Robles criticized, who also recalled that the Russian military offensive began just a year after an attempt was made to agree on a diplomatic solution "by all possible means".

For this reason, he believes that "the best way to work for peace" is by supporting Ukraine, which is suffering the "massacre" of its citizens. "There are no shortcuts, not only so that they lay down their weapons but so that people can live freely in a democracy with human rights. What Putin is doing is massacring the civilian population of Ukraine," he denounced.

In this context, he has recognized that he does not dare to venture what the Russian president's announcement to suspend the nuclear agreement may entail -- "I do not dare to say what may go through Putin's head, anything is possible"-- , but he has recognized that the Atlantic Alliance is aware that the nuclear threat "is always a risk" and "we must be very careful and very careful".

In this context, it has reaffirmed Spain's commitment to send the Leopard 2A4 main battle tanks at the end of March or the beginning of April and has announced that this Tuesday new Ukrainian soldiers wounded in the war will arrive in Zaragoza for medical treatment.
