Podemos calls on Sánchez to reactivate the reform to change the majorities in the CGPJ if the negotiation with the PP fails

MADRID, 13 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The spokesman for United We Can in Congress, Pablo Echenique, has demanded the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, to reactivate the reform to enable the election of members of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) by absolute majority, as they already proposed in 2020 , if the negotiation with the PP to renew the institution fails again.

"If the PP insists on maintaining the blockade that it exercises throughout the legislature, which would be nothing less than a soft blow to democracy, we have nothing left to do but end the blockade with votes and in a democratic way," he said. exhorted the spokesman for United We Can, Pablo Echenique, to the chief executive.

During his speech in the plenary session of Congress before Sánchez's appearance to report on the last European Council and the measures against inflation adopted by the Government, Echenique alluded to the new contacts opened with the PP after the resignation of the former president of the CGPJ Carlos Lesmes , transferring to the head of the Executive his "skepticism" before the intentions of the popular ones.

In this sense, the leader of the purple formation has criticized the formation led by Alberto Núñez Feijóo for blocking "in a seditious", "anti-democratic" and "unconstitutional" manner, to block the renewal of the governing body of the judges, while in the Chamber complains about the "institutional deterioration" of the CGPJ.

And Echenique has accused the PP of doing so for two reasons: trying to "protect his own against corruption trials" and using justice "spuriously" for his own political ends.

Therefore, Echenique has hoped that there will be an agreement because what is happening with the CGPJ is "very serious", but he has also slipped his lack of confidence that the PP agrees to renew the institution because they see that they launch "new excuses" to prevent the replacement of members, alluding to the need to reform the election system.

Therefore, he has warned Sánchez that if this latest negotiation ends like the previous ones and is "boycotted" by the PP, the progressive majority in Congress "cannot afford to do nothing."

And in this sense, he has summoned Sánchez that they have a "drafted law" and that the PSOE itself signed to be able to overcome that blockage, thus asking to recover this parliamentary initiative.

Two years ago, United We Can promoted two years ago and with the endorsement of the PSOE a legislative reform to enable the option of renewing the CGPJ by absolute majority, in case it was not possible with the consensus of two thirds of the chamber.

But after months of being frozen without its processing being initiated, it assumed the PSOE's lack of support for this approach, which meant its de facto withdrawal, although it was open to negotiating new formulas with the PSOE in order to end that blockade. .

However, and since last summer, the minority partner of the Executive has been demanding that the Socialists reconsider their misgivings and propose in Congress a change in the majority system to elect the members of the CGPJ, given that it has a parliamentary majority of the bloc of investiture to approve it.
