Paraguay's President Advises Vice President to Resign Following US Corruption Accusations

MADRID, 22 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The president of Paraguay, Mario Abdo Benítez, has recommended this Sunday night to the vice president, Hugo Velázquez, that "the correct thing is to resign", after the accusations of corruption launched by the United States, although he "absolutely" respects his decision to continue in charge.

"I think the right thing is to resign, but I absolutely respect his decision. I do not have the power of dismissal and I respect his decision," the president said in an interview with Paraguayan channel Telefuturo.

Benítez has said that if he had been in Velázquez's situation, "he would have resigned" from the position. However, the Paraguayan vice president has ruled out the resignation, which, he has asserted, he will only present once the Prosecutor's Office notifies him of any complaint about these accusations made by the United States.

On August 12, the United States Department of State indicated that Velázquez fell into the category of "significantly corrupt" personalities, due to his alleged participation in this type of crime, including bribery of officials and interference in public processes.
