Pakistan Finance Minister Announces Resignation Amid Major Economic Crisis

MADRID, 26 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Pakistan's Finance Minister, Miftah Ismail, announced on Saturday that he has communicated his resignation to the prime minister and that he will submit his formal resignation in the coming days.

"In a meeting with Mian Nawaz Sharif and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, today I verbally resigned as Finance Minister. I will submit a formal resignation upon arrival in Pakistan," Ismail reported through his Twitter account.

In addition, the leader of the economic portfolio added that "it has been an honor to serve twice as Finance Minister".

This resignation comes amid an economic crisis that worsened after recent floods that killed more than a thousand people.

However, the minister, at the beginning of September, declared that the current Executive would have saved the nation from bankruptcy, "from a situation like the one in Sri Lanka", according to the state agency APP. Likewise, he advocated economic self-sufficiency as a means of "achieving" true freedom.

Ismail is also the fifth finance minister to resign in less than four years. Since he took office in April, the former IMF economist has worked to reduce the large trade gap and current account deficit. The minister indicated that he expected economic growth of more than 3.5 percent for this fiscal year.
