Pablo Iglesias does not rule out that Sánchez summons Generals in April and proposes a coalition of leftist forces

He sees a tragedy that "Sumar" presents himself and insists that Yolanda Díaz clarify her position

BILBAO, 5 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The former general secretary of Podemos Pablo Iglesias has not ruled out that Pedro Sánchez convenes Generals in April, and hopes, in that case, a coalition "of all left-wing political forces." In addition, he has warned that "it would be a tragedy" for Sumar to "present himself" in the upcoming elections and has insisted on the promoter of the project and second vice president of the Government, Yolanda Díaz, to "clarify" now "if he wants to be everyone's candidate.

In a gathering on Radio Euskadi, Iglesias said he hoped "there would be an agreement" on the matter and warned that "disconnecting the fate" of the general elections "from what happens in the regional and municipal governments" would be "a mistake". In his opinion, they are "two definitive electoral moments", so he "would not rule out" that Pedro Sánchez called the general elections "a month before", in April. "And I hope that there will be an understanding in the form of a coalition of all the political forces of the left," he added.

To argue this theory, he has pointed out that "a political decision-maker values options, he does not play everything a priori on one card." In this sense, he recalled "the scenario" of 2019, in which general elections "that did not have to be so early" took place in April.

In his opinion, the argument that Pedro Sánchez will try to make the European Presidency profitable would not work "if the Moncloa survey teams tell him: look, the municipal and regional ones look bad" and warn him that the PSOE may "not recover any territory and lose a few."

If those advisors also warn him that "after that the story is going to be installed that" the PSOE "has lost the generals and there is going to be a lot of internal noise within the party", to think that the president of the Government "does not is going to consider the possibility of an electoral advance, also taking into account what happened in 2019", it would be "reckless".

"Does this mean that he is going to advance the elections one hundred percent? No, I think he is going to play with the different options, but right now no survey is worth anything if the general elections are going to be after the municipal and regional ones" , has said.

The former leader of Podemos recalled that his party's spokesmen "have already made it clear what" their position is. "Podemos is going to seek unity above any consideration, I think it is evident that it would be a tragedy if Sumar wanted to run on his own in the elections without having a political party like Podemos," he said.

For this reason, he has assured that the purple formation "is going to defend that understanding until the end." In addition, he has predicted "many siren songs by some media sectors, the same ones that promoted Más País to break with Podemos" and that they will recommend Yolanda Díaz to present herself alone.

"It is a demoscopia and political evidence that going separately would be a mistake, there has to be an understanding. Podemos has said that the coalition formula is the most sensible and it will be necessary to let the bases of the parties position themselves," he said.

Pablo Iglesias has stated that his party "has been saying for a long time" that this is an "urgent" issue, that the electoral issue is already there, that Yolanda must clarify if she wants to be everyone's candidate and that mechanisms will have to be put in place to reach an agreement ".

"The participation of the people is crucial, that ultimately it is the militants of the different parties that participate to decide how it goes. For Podemos, unity is above all consideration," he clarified.

In this sense, he recalled the confluence with the IU in the last elections, with a bet "for candidates who are not from the party." "The bet, at the time, for Yolanda, was to bet on a PCE militant. It is not arrogant to say that Podemos is the most relevant political force on the Spanish left in the last eight years," he claimed.
