Muguruza falls at her Berlin premiere

MADRID, 14 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Spanish tennis player Garbiñe Muguruza has said goodbye in the first round of the Berlin tournament, in the WTA 500 category and played on grass, after falling to the German Andrea Petkovic (7-6(8), 6-4), a new stumble that delves into the bad feelings ahead of Wimbledon, the third 'Grand Slam' of the season.

The Spanish-Venezuelan, number ten in the world, has given up again in a premiere after also saying goodbye to the first exchange at Roland Garros against the Estonian Kaia Kanepi (2-6, 6-3, 6-4), endorsing an unlucky first half of the year; of the 17 matches played in 2022, Muguruza has only won seven.

This time, in the Wimbledon qualifier, she squandered three break points in the opening game before giving up serve in the fourth. Although she responded with a counterbreak, her sleeve fell to the German tennis player's side after a long and erratic tie-break.

Already in the second set, a lonely break in the first game was enough for Petkovic to get the contest back on track, which he closed on his fifth match point after just over two hours of play. Now, the Spanish must recover to face the 'great' in London, which she managed to win in 2017.
