López Obrador formally proposes the elimination of summer time in Mexico

MADRID, 5 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has announced the sending to Congress of a proposal to eliminate summer time, appealing to social rejection of the time change, the alleged health problems it entails and the scant impact on savings energetic.

Mexico has had two different seasons since 1996, in such a way that between the beginning of April and the end of October the clocks are advanced to supposedly take advantage of the daylight hours. López Obrador had already advanced his intention to reverse this measure months ago.

The Government estimates, based on a survey by the Ministry of the Interior, that 71 percent of the population is in favor of applying a single schedule throughout the year, according to Mexican media.

The Minister of Health, Jorge Alcocer, pointed out this Tuesday at a press conference that the change in clocks has detrimental effects on health, including an increase in heart attacks and depression. "If we want to improve our health, we must not fight against our biological clock," he has declared.

For her part, the person in charge of Energy, Rocío Nahle, explained that the energy savings, if any, are very low and do not compensate for the disorders associated with the time change. In this sense, she has indicated that "there is no impact" by which it is not possible to reverse a decision that, as the Government has recalled, is merely political.
