Kenyan Police raid offices allegedly linked to Vice President William Ruto

The operation is settled with the seizure of two servers, two weeks before the presidential

MADRID, 25 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Kenyan Police have carried out a raid on offices allegedly used in the past by the vice president and presidential candidate, William Ruto, an operation that has resulted in the seizure of two servers.

According to information collected by the Kenyan newspaper 'The Star', the operation was carried out on Sunday after a group of workers began to remove materials from the site, without Ruto having spoken so far.

Nairobi Police Chief James Mugera has detailed that the operation was launched following reports of the office being emptied. "We have taken two servers that will be analyzed by experts and will tell us more about the contents," he explained.

Likewise, he has stressed that he does not know who owns the office and has added that one of the managers has informed him that the materials were being transferred to another place. The aforementioned newspaper has indicated that several workers were demolishing the office.

For their part, the guards of the building have reported that the demolition of the office began during the day on Sunday. "Most of the computers and servers were removed before the police arrived," said one of them.

The operation has been carried out about two weeks before the presidential elections, in which Ruto appears as one of the main candidates along with the former prime minister and historical opposition leader Raila Odinga.

A member of Ruto's campaign has told the BBC that they do not want to be drawn into what he has described as "a show" and "a distraction" on the campaign trail.

Likewise, the operation takes place amid tensions between the security forces and the electoral commission, which over the weekend denounced the arrest of three foreigners hired to work on the electronic voting system, criticism rejected by the Police.

At the end of May, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta called on the candidates for the general elections to accept the results and avoid a possible increase in tensions or violence. "Generations of leaders are being asked to pass the baton without breaking, and I intend to do just that," he noted.

Kenyatta has expressed his support for Odinga ahead of the presidential elections after distancing himself from Ruto after his re-election for a second term in 2018. Odinga chose Martha Karua as his electoral running mate, while Ruto has chosen Rigathi Gachagua, who was an advisor of Kenyatta between 2001 and 2006, as a candidate for Vice President.
