Government condemns "unacceptable" executions in Iran

MADRID, 8 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, EU and Cooperation has condemned this Sunday the "unacceptable" executions in Iran, which occurred this Saturday, January 7, of two protesters found guilty of the death of a security guard during one of the multiple national protests against the death in custody of the young Mahsa Amini.

"Spain opposes the death penalty in all countries and circumstances," the department said in a message posted on the social network Twitter.

These events have also been denounced by the EU, which declared itself "horrified" after the news of the protesters. The European body reiterated its "firm" and "principled" opposition to capital punishment as "cruel and inhuman punishment, which does not act as a deterrent to crime and represents an unacceptable denial of human dignity and integrity."

Brussels also once again asked the authorities to put an end to this "deeply reprehensible practice" and asks them to suspend the possibility of the death sentence to which more than a hundred detainees risk, according to local NGOs.

In this sense, the Spanish Embassy in Iran has been closely following the cases of the two Spaniards detained by the Iranian authorities for weeks and keeps the families of both duly informed, according to diplomatic sources told Europa Press.

The president of the Supreme Court of Iran, Gholam Hosein Mohseni Ejei, reported last Monday, January 2, that 3,000 prisoners will be released in the coming days by virtue of the anniversary of the death of General Qasem Soleimani after a US bombardment in Iraq in January 2020.

Iran's highest judicial representative has also indicated that the death sentences of 16 inmates will be reduced. This decision has been made, according to Mohseni Ejei, in commemoration of Soleimani, who made numerous efforts to help those in need, as reported by the IRNA news agency.
