Ferrari sends in the first free practices in Spa ahead of Verstappen

MADRID, 26 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Spanish driver Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) dominated the first contact at the Spa-Francorchamps Circuit, the scene this weekend of the Belgian Grand Prix, the fourteenth round of the Formula 1 World Championship, ahead of his teammate the Monegasque Charles Leclerc and Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull), while Fernando Alonso (Alpine) finished fourteenth.

The man from Madrid led this first session in Spa with a time of 1:46.538, nine tenths faster than Leclerc (1:46.607) and more than a second better than Vrestappen (1:46.755). Thus, Ferrari and Red Bull continue to wage their particular battle to be the fastest on the grid, although with George Russel -five podiums this year- fourth above 1:47.

His teammate, Lewis Hamilton, could only be ninth, almost two seconds behind Sainz, (1:48.420). Lance Stroll (Aston Martin), fifth; Daniel Ricciardo (McLaren), seventh; Yuki Tsunoda (AlphaTauri), eighth; and Sergio Pérez (Red Bull), tenth; they completed the 'Top 10' of the session, with Fernando Alonso fourteenth with a time of 1:49.664.

The first appointment after the summer break began with the threat of rain on the track, something that caused the first single-seaters to leave the boxes with tires for wet tracks, although after the first few laps they saw that the circuit was dry, so They quickly placed the white and hard ones to continue testing in this first session.

With the rain threatening in those first moments, the most striking incident was carried out by the Haas driver Kevin Magnussen, whose car was stopped in the first sector, causing a red flag, although with the clock running.

Alexander Albon and the McLarens of Lando Norris and Ricciardo gave the surprise at the beginning of the session, taking the lead, taking advantage of those doubts with the tires in the first minutes. In addition, the Thai -who finally finished sixth (1:47.835)- represented one of the images of the day, since, despite the change in the regulations to reduce the effect of 'porpoising', his car bounced in an exaggerated way on this session.

The rain truce only lasted until the last five minutes of the session, when the water ruined those last laps to test, following the minutes lost by the red flag after the Magnussen incident. For this reason, the pilots decided not to risk the downpour that fell over the entire track to dismiss this first contact.
