Alonso: "I intend to win again in this sport"

The two-time champion leaves Alpine to open a new stage in Formula 1

MADRID, 1 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The two-time Formula 1 world champion Spanish driver Fernando Alonso will race for the Aston Martin team from the next championship in 2023 after reaching a multi-year agreement with the British team, which he will join after leaving Alpine and in search of a new adventure in F1 .

"The Aston Martin Aramco Cognizant Formula One Team is pleased to confirm that Fernando Alonso will join the team in 2023 on a multi-year contract," confirmed Aston Martin.

The British team moves fast and, days after Sebastian Vettel announced his retirement from competition at the end of the season, he announced the Spaniard as his new driver. "The entire company is very excited to bring Fernando's incredible experience, brilliant pace and racing style to the team."

For Aston Martin, a team in which the Canadian driver Lance Stroll will remain, except for changes, the hiring of a "special talent" like Alonso's is a "clear declaration of intent" and a commitment to develop a "winning team".

In the statement, Fernando Alonso himself, who will leave Alpine after this campaign full of errors in the team and problems in his car, assured that Aston Martin is applying the energy and commitment "to win".

“I have known Lawrence and Lance (Stroll) for many years and it is very obvious that they have the ambition and passion to succeed in Formula 1. I have seen how the team has consistently attracted great people with winning pedigrees, and I have realized account of the great commitment to the new facilities and resources at Silverstone", valued the Spaniard.

"No one in Formula 1 today is showing greater vision and absolute commitment to winning, and that makes it a really exciting opportunity for me. I still have the hunger and ambition to fight to be at the front, and I want to be part of an organization committed to learning, developing and succeeding," he said.

Alonso said that the "passion" and "desire to win" that he has witnessed at Aston Martin convinced him to maintain his "enjoyment and commitment" to F1. "I intend to win again in this sport and therefore I have to take the opportunities that seem right to me," he added.

For his part, the executive president of the Aston Martin F1 team, Lawrence Stroll, assured that he admires Alonso. "I have known and admired Fernando for many years and he has always been clear that he is a committed winner like me," he commented.

"I set out to bring together the best people and develop the right resources and organization to succeed in this highly competitive sport, and those plans are now taking shape at Silverstone."

Hence, the president of Aston Martin seemed "natural" to sign Alonso. "We quickly established in our recent conversations that we have the same ambitions and values, and it was logical and easy to confirm our desire to work together," he said.

Also the director of the British team, Mike Krack, stressed the "excitement" they have right now after being able to confirm Alonso from 2023. "I have witnessed the excitement in the engineering team and throughout the organization at the opportunity to work with Fernando", he acknowledged.

"We know that almost anyone can learn from someone of Fernando's caliber and experience. We are confident that he will inspire everyone to improve and that will only enhance the already contagious energy that exists within the team. We are on a journey to create a winning organization, and it is clear that Fernando will accelerate our progress."

"The team has new leadership focused on the development of AMR23, and we are all delighted that they and our future projects will benefit from the knowledge and experience that Fernando will bring to the table."
