Erdogan threatens again to veto the entry of Sweden and Finland into NATO

MADRID, 18 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused Sweden on Monday of "not keeping its promises" and thus warned that Turkey could veto its entry and that of Finland into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

"We see that Sweden in particular is not fulfilling its promises," Erdogan said this Monday at a press conference reported by the newspaper 'Daily Sabah' in reference to the commitment of the Nordic countries to persecute the members of the Workers' Party of the Kurdistan (PKK) refugees there.

Erdogan has also assured that Turkey has repeatedly raised its position on this issue. "Our position as Turkey is clear. The rest is up to them," he said.

Specifically, the Turkish president has assured that Sweden had promised to deport 70 "terrorists" to Turkey, an extreme that does not appear in the Memorandum of Understanding signed by Turkey, Sweden and Finland during the NATO summit held in Madrid at the end of of June.

Sweden has already warned that it will not deport any person with Swedish citizenship to Turkey, considering that it does not have an assimilable legal system with regard to respect for Human Rights.
