Erdogan plans to talk to Putin about Russian referendums held in Ukraine

MADRID, 29 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan plans to speak with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, to address the Russian-organized referendums held in four regions of eastern Ukraine where an alleged majority of voters have chosen to annex their territories to Russia. .

During the day this Wednesday, Erdogan had a conversation with the Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelenski, who would have asked him for help to "convince Putin" about the referendum issue, according to the Turkish president in an interview with the Anadolu agency. .

Following Zelensky's request, the Turkish president has detailed that he will hold a conversation this Thursday with Putin to discuss the holding of the referendums, a fact that he has described as problematic.

"The event of the referendums in 4 cities (...) brings problems. I would have liked them not to hold the referendums and that, instead, we could solve the problem diplomatically," the Turkish president told the aforementioned agency .

Recently held referendums in the regions of Donetk, Lugansk, Jerson and Zaporiyia during this weekend have been widely rejected by the international community, alleging that they do not meet democratic standards.

Turkey is a member of NATO and maintains good relations with both Ukraine and Russia, having mediated between the two states since the war began, even reaching an agreement for the export of Ukrainian grain.
