De la Puente and Caverzaschi brush the doubles final at Roland Garros

MADRID, 3 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Spaniards Martín de la Puente and Dani Caverzaschi were on the verge of making history in national wheelchair tennis this Friday by staying on the verge of the final of the doubles draw at Roland Garros, the second 'Grand Slam' of the season.

The Galician and the Madrilenian competed for the first time in a 'big', both individually and in pairs, and were close to fighting for the title, although finally the British Alfe Hewitt and Gordon Reid, first favorites, avoided it in a duel which was decided in three sets and in a 'supertie-break' to ten points (6-2, 3-6 and 1-0 (10/8)).

Hewitt and Reid started very strong and hardly gave the Spanish options, but they did not collapse and were able to react in the second set where they came to dominate 5-1 before stopping the reaction of their rivals.

Thus, the ticket to the final against the Japanese Shingo Kunieda and the Argentine Gustavo Fernández had to be decided in 'sudden death' and De la Puente and Caverzaschi could not take advantage of their best start (3/0). The British drew on their experience in these contests and the Vigo and Madrid natives had to give up definitively.
