Cuban authorities and citizens have bid farewell to 14 of the 16 who died in the fire in the oil tanks in Matanzas, allegedly caused by a lightning strike on August 5 and which caused one of the greatest tragedies in recent history. on the island.

After two days of official mourning, Cuba has proceeded with the funeral of the last 14 fatalities, mostly firefighters. The act, in which an honor guard was held, was attended by the current president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, and his predecessor, Raúl Castro.

Both presidents have personally offered their condolences to the relatives who had come to the Matanzas Firefighters Museum. "Our deepest condolences and support to you at this time," said Díaz-Canel, according to statements collected by the Presidency.

The Cuban Ministry of Public Health maintains the number of people killed by the fire at 16, of unprecedented proportions on the island. It caused 146 injuries, of which 18 were still hospitalized this Friday, according to the official balance.
