Cepsa reorganizes its research center to lead the energy transition

The company plans to increase its investment in research by more than 50% until 2030

MADRID, 3 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Cepsa has reorganized its research center into four major divisions, with the aim of leading the energy transition and "becoming a company that advances in sustainable mobility".

As expressed by the energy company in a statement, this reorganization will focus not only on advancing in the creation of new, more sustainable fuels, but also on detecting market needs and trends to increase the efficiency and decarbonisation of its business.

In this sense, the new areas created are energy transition, science, advanced analysis and operations excellence. Within the first, a specific team has been formed for decarbonisation, with the aim of reducing carbon dioxide emissions, as well as a team focused on the study and recovery of waste to produce advanced biofuels and other chemical products.

To promote these changes, Cepsa has incorporated Avelino Corma as scientific advisor. This professor, Princess of Asturias Award for Research in 2014, is the founder of the Institute of Chemical Technology, a research center of the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) and the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC).

For Cepsa's director of technology, projects and services, José Manuel Martínez, innovation is the "shortest" way to achieve the "ambitious goals" of energy transition. "Through the new organization of our research center, we further strengthen this commitment to accelerate the transformation of our company", he stated.

In addition, the company has established a roadmap to cut its emissions. Specifically, it expects to reduce its emissions by 55% in 2030, compared to 2019 levels, and be carbon neutral before 2050.
