Cepsa and the Port of Rotterdam plan to launch a green hydrogen corridor to Algeciras (Cádiz) in 2027

MADRID, 11 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Cepsa and the Port of Rotterdam (Netherlands) have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop "the first green hydrogen corridor between southern and northern Europe", which is expected to be operational in 2027 and will connect Algeciras (Cádiz ) with the Dutch port, as reported by the energy company in a statement on Tuesday.

The company plans to export to Rotterdam the hydrogen produced in its energy park in San Roque (Cádiz), near the Bay of Algeciras, through energy carriers such as ammonia or methanol.

"This facility (the one in Rotterdam) is the most important energy port in Europe, since it manages 13% of European energy demand, while the Port of Algeciras is the first port in Spain, the fourth in Europe and a strategic center on the trade route between Europe and Asia", the company has assessed.

According to Cepsa, the infrastructure and facilities necessary for the import of green hydrogen and its distribution in northwestern Europe are being developed in the Dutch region with the support of the Government of the Netherlands, the Port Authority and numerous private companies present in the region. zone.

"This supply of green fuels will contribute to decarbonizing industry and maritime transport in the Bay of Algeciras and Rotterdam, while supporting the European Union's RePowerEU strategy, which aims to guarantee Europe's energy security and independence and stimulate clean energy production," added the company.

The route is expected to be operational in 2027 and Cepsa also intends to develop a similar supply chain from its La Rábida energy park in Huelva.

"This agreement is an example that great collaborations are necessary to carry out the energy transition in Europe and guarantee a secure and independent energy supply," said the CEO of Cepsa, Maarten Wetselaar.

The manager has also stressed that Spain has an "ideal" position to become a "world leader" in the production and export of green hydrogen due to its "strategic location, the abundant generation of renewable energies and its solid energy infrastructures and key ports, like those of Algeciras and Huelva".

For his part, the CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, Allard Castelein, stressed that "northwest Europe uses much more energy than it can produce sustainably", which is why "multiple routes are being established for green hydrogen" in collaboration with "exporting countries and private companies around the world".

"We expect that in 2050 some 20 million tons of hydrogen will pass through the port, of which only two million will be produced locally," he added.
