Biden will inform Sánchez that the United States will add two destroyers to the four that it has deployed in Rota (Cádiz)

MADRID, 28 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The President of the United States, Joe Biden, will inform the Spanish Chief Executive, Pedro Sánchez, on Tuesday that the United States will deploy two new destroyers at the Rota naval base (Cádiz), which will be added to the four that have already been there since the years 2014 and 2015.

This has been stated by the United States National Security Adviser, Jake Sullivande, aboard the 'Air Force One' on the trip that takes Biden to Madrid to participate in the NATO Summit that is being held this week in Spain. Earlier, this Tuesday, the US president will hold a bilateral meeting with Sánchez at the Palacio de la Moncloa this summer.

Among the issues to be discussed, he announced that the US presence in the Spanish bases of Morón (Seville) and Rota (Cádiz) will be addressed and, specifically, it will formalize the intention of the United States to expand its naval presence.

These two new destroyers would be added to the four that have already been in Rota since 2014 and 2015 (USS Carney, USS Donald Cook, USS Porter and USS Ross) and are integrated into the NATO anti-missile shield to deal with possible attacks by other foreign powers.

This reinforcement of the anti-missile shield, already proposed with the Donald Trump Administration, is estimated to lead to an increase of 600 soldiers in Rota, in addition to forcing the reform of the bilateral agreement between Spain and the United States.
