Biden asks to defend democracy against the threat of extremism from Donald Trump

MADRID, 2 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The President of the United States, Joe Biden, has assured that the supporters of former President Donald Trump pose a threat to American democracy, for which he has urged the citizens of the country to defend it.

This was said in a speech on Thursday night near the building where the Declaration of Independence was proclaimed more than 200 years ago and the country's Constitution was signed, arguing that part of the Republican party "no longer respects" the American Magna Carta.

"I have come here tonight, to the place where it all began, to speak plainly to the nation about the threats we face. About the power we have in our hands to deal with those threats. And about the incredible future we have." before us if we choose it," the US president began.

"The forces of MAGA (an acronym for Trump's slogan 'Make America Great Again') are determined to take this country backwards. Towards an America where there is no right to choose, no right to privacy, no right to contraception, nor the right to marry who one loves," Biden asserted, referring to the recent revocation of the right to abortion in the country by decision of the Supreme Court.

Biden has emphasized that Donald Trump and his supporters in the Republican Party "represent extremism" and threaten "the very foundation of our republic."

"It is my duty to tell the truth (...) The MAGA Republicans do not respect the Constitution. They do not believe in the rule of law and do not recognize the will of the people. They refused to accept the results of free elections," he recalled The president of United States.

However, he has stressed that "not all Republicans, not even a majority" are supporters of the former president, although he has recognized that "there is no doubt that the Republican Party today is dominated and intimidated by Donald Trump." "That is a threat to this country," he added.

For this reason, Biden has urged the citizens of the country not to remain powerless while the defenders of former President Trump threaten democracy, while recalling that there is a majority of Americans who reject extremism.

Likewise, he has reiterated that the power to stop "this assault on democracy" is in their hands, also admitting that he believes that the United States is at "a turning point."

"We are in one of those moments that will determine what is to come, so now the United States has to decide whether to go forward or go back. Whether to go to the future or to obsess with the past (...) The MAGA Republicans have already made their decision," the White House tenant snapped.

"For a long time, we have made sure that American democracy is guaranteed. But it is not. We have to defend it. Protect it. Defend it. Each and every one of us," he added.

The speech of the president of the United States has been given two months before the celebration of the legislative elections, in which the composition of a large part of the House of Representatives and the Senate of the country will be decided.

So far, the polls indicate that the Republican Party could win the majority in both chambers, although the Democrats are climbing in the polls thanks to some of the latest measures approved by the Biden Administration and the search of the house of former President Trump in Florida.
