Belarra sends to the PSOE the proposal for a help check of up to €500, the tax on supermarkets and freezing mortgages

It also proposes a subsidy to the CCAA to reduce the cost of school canteens

MADRID, 14 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Ministry of Social Rights and the 2030 Agenda, led by Ione Belarra, has sent this Wednesday to the socialist wing of the Government its proposal to deploy a check to help families of up to 500 euros, which would benefit seven million households by having an impact on those whose income does not exceed 42,000 euros per year.

Also in line with what was stated by the formation, it demands to create a new temporary tax on large supermarkets that would tax their extraordinary profits of these companies at 33%, following the philosophy of temporary taxes on banks and energy companies already approved.

Along with this, two "key" measures are incorporated in the guarantee of the right to housing. In this way, for families with mortgages, installments subject to variable interest rates would be frozen throughout 2023.

Meanwhile, households that live on rent, the duration of the lease contracts would be extended for an additional year to avoid large price increases, as was done during the pandemic by royal decree.

Sources from the Ministry have explained that these are the central points of the battery of legislative measures that your document includes, with a view to the next extension of the anti-crisis decree that the coalition Executive must undertake.

The philosophy of these measures revolves around helping families in the face of rising food prices, guaranteeing adequate nutrition for minors and the "adequate" protection of the right to housing.

In this way, the payment of the aid check, as Social Rights has designed, would be granted to both self-employed or self-employed workers as well as beneficiaries of unemployment benefits and subsidies. Thus, it would expand the direct aid approved in June and help families offset the rise in prices.

In addition, it is requested to grant a subsidy to the CCAA so that they reduce the cost of school canteens for children under 16 years of age, thus guaranteeing their adequate nutrition. This fund would benefit public school students who are at risk of poverty or social exclusion.

Podemos already advanced its proposals for the extension of the anti-cirisis decree on Monday at a press conference, although then it said that the number of beneficiaries of the aid check would be eight million people and now it is limited to seven.

The party's co-spokesman, Pablo Fernández, pointed out that the tax on windfall profits from large distributors had had "good results" in Portugal and its deployment would have "dissuasive" effects to avoid rising food prices.

To this, another point is also added and that is to increase the financing of public transport by 50%, given that in this context he sees a need to promote its use among citizens.

With regard to mortgages, the leader of the purple formation has shelled that they have risen by 40% and represents an "excessive expense" for families, which must be tackled by freezing the cost of said credit.

Therefore, Podemos trusts that its partner will "compromise", "accept" and "support" these proposals that are "common sense" to "support and protect" a relevant group of the population.

For her part, the second vice president, Yolanda Díaz, commented on Monday that the Executive is now negotiating extraordinary measures to continue advancing in the protection of rights and fundamentally in two fields: housing and combating inflation in food prices.

In this sense, he stressed that the contacts within the Executive branch are carried out with discretion and "absolute confidentiality", given that if "you want to reach agreements" it is in your interest that "the negotiation go through".
