At least 22 migrants killed off the coast of Libya while trying to cross into Europe

MADRID, 6 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

At least 22 Malian citizens have died this Tuesday off the coast of Libya when they were heading in a boat towards the Italian coast, according to the Malian authorities in a statement.

On the boat was a group of 83 migrants who had been in danger off the Libyan coast since June 22. Of the 22 deceased, at least three were minors, according to the Malian Foreign Ministry.

Once the 61 survivors were rescued by the Lebanese authorities, the Malian Executive has announced that they are "taking measures" to identify their compatriots for their subsequent repatriation.

"On behalf of the Government, the minister (Abdoulaye Diop) offers his condolences to the grieving families and the Malian people for this tragedy," added the Malian Executive in the letter.

Diop also thanked the International Organization for Migration (IOM) for its efforts to identify and help survivors, and called on the people of Mali to fight against irregular migration.
