Armenia and Azerbaijan agree to recognize each other's territorial integrity and sovereignty

MADRID, 7 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

After a meeting mediated by the French President, Emmanuel Macron, and the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan have agreed to commit to the UN Charter and the Alma Ata Declaration of 1991 through which both countries recognize the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the other.

This has been confirmed by the Elysee in a statement issued late on Friday morning, after the President of France announced hours before a meeting with the Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinián, and with the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev .

"Armenia and Azerbaijan have confirmed their commitment to the UN Charter and the Alma Ata Declaration of 1991, by which they mutually recognize their territorial integrity and sovereignty," says the letter issued by the French Executive, detailing that the agreement will serve as the basis for an upcoming meeting of the Border Commissions that will take place at the end of October.

However, Armenia has agreed to facilitate the establishment of a civilian mission of the European Union on the border with Azerbaijan, while the Azeri government has agreed to cooperate with this mission for its part.

The mission will start in October and will last a maximum of two months. The objective of the mission is to promote confidence and, through its reports, contribute to the border demarcation commissions, as detailed by the Elysee.
