Alcaraz takes a liking to Arthur Ashe, Muguruza strengthens and Badosa collapses

The Murcian sweeps the Argentine Federico Coria with style

Albert Ramos fell to Cilic in the second round

MADRID, 1 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz defeated Argentine Federico Coria (6-2, 6-1, 7-5) to reach the third round at the US Open, the last 'Grand Slam' of the season where Garbiñe Muguruza also advanced strongly, while who said goodbye to the tournament this Thursday Paula Badosa and Albert Ramos.

The morning session in New York had lime and sand for Spanish tennis. Alcaraz, who adds more victory than anyone this 2022 in the ATP (46), gave a recital of the best version of him that ended up beating Arthur Ashe. The Murcian, who is playing for the second time in New York after reaching the quarterfinals last year, will face the American Jenson Brooksby in the third round.

Alcaraz pressed the rest from the first game, also with high quality points, and an offensive game that gave him the 'break' in the fifth game. The Argentine had his answer, but the Spaniard held the lead and broke again to win the opening set. Juan Carlos Ferrero's pupil raised the level in an overwhelming start to the second set (4-0).

The Murcian gale ignited the New York central, delighted with the repertoire of an Alcaraz who opts to be number one in the world if he reaches the final. Coria still gave war, even 'break' down, to have a good chance of getting 5-4, but the Spaniard defended his serve and scored the game for the rest.

Meanwhile, Albert Ramos said goodbye to a serious Marin Cilic to advance to the third round with a 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-3. The Spaniard, who had three defeats in the last year against the Croatian, did not find a way to squeeze the rest in the first set and his reaction in the second did not come to fruition despite having a set ball.

Cilic turned around a 3-5 lead and took the set in sudden death. Again both kept their serve at the beginning of the third act, until Ramos gave in in the sixth game. The Spaniard fought for the option of extending the match, with a 'break' ball that he did not take advantage of, while Cilic made an appointment with the British Daniel Evans.

In the women's draw, the second round ended with Badosa collapsing (6-7(5), 6-1, 6-2) after winning the first set against Croatian Petra Martic. The Catalan took the lead in a battle heat, with both on the attack and determined by details in a sudden death that smiled at Badosa.

Despite the moral reinforcement, the Spanish fell from the match from two wasted break balls in the third game of the second set. The Croatian made five games in a row against a Badosa that she did not connect like before, that did not reach the balls and that in the third quarter suffered an identical script that fired her from New York.

On the other hand, Muguruza managed to grow as her compatriot also needed in a bad moment of confidence and game, to overcome the Czech Linda Fruhvirtova with authority (6-0, 6-4) and meet Petra Kvitova, also of the Czech Republic, in the third round.

The Spanish-Venezuelan, who has her roof in Flushing Meadows in the round of 16, destroyed her young rival in the first set with a donut in 20 minutes. Later, 'Garbi' played with fire and suffered as he has been doing this season, but came back from 1-4 saving three balls from 1-5 to close on the fast track.
