Albares assures that the Venezuelan government and opposition have asked Spain to "accompany" the dialogue in Mexico

BRUSSELS, 23 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, announced this Monday that the Venezuelan government and opposition have asked Spain to "accompany" the dialogue they are holding in Mexico for a democratic solution to the crisis.

During the meeting of the Twenty-seven foreign ministers that will discuss the new political situation in Venezuela, the Spanish minister will explain to his European colleagues his contacts with the chief negotiators and will discuss how the EU can support the talks process.

"They convey to me the genuine desire that the dialogue advance, of the steps they want for it and they have requested that Spain be present and accompany the dialogue," Albares said in statements to the press in Brussels about his contacts with the parties.

The High Representative of the EU for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, has put on Monday's agenda a debate on the new situation that is opening up in Venezuela, where the EU aspires to recalibrate its position taking into account changes at the regional and national, after the cessation of Juan Guaidó as president 'in charge' and the greater presence of the Nicolás Maduro regime in the international sphere.

Diplomatic sources explain that the idea is to revive the contact group with Venezuela to resume relations with Caracas and try to influence the talks in Mexico to channel a democratic solution to the crisis.

The Government and the opposition of Venezuela signed last November, within the framework of the talks in Mexico, an instrumental social protection agreement for peace aimed at the recovery of Venezuelan State resources blocked in the international financial system in exchange for a plan set of infrastructure improvements.

Spain has been one of the international actors that has taken the most steps in recent months to resume relations with Caracas and has shown its support for the dialogue in Mexico. As an example, he raised the representation in Caracas to the rank of ambassador, the same decision that Portugal has taken.

"We support the dialogue between Venezuelans because we believe that the solution for Venezuela can only come through peaceful, democratic channels and through dialogue between Venezuelans," Albares said in an interview with Europa Press a few weeks ago.
