Adrián Vázquez will relieve Garicano as the new spokesperson for Ciudadanos in the European Parliament

MADRID, 31 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) -

MEP Adrián Vázquez Lázara will be the new spokesperson for Ciudadanos in the European Parliament after Luis Garicano left for Columbia University (New York), as announced on Wednesday by the 'orange' group.

Vázquez, who is also the party's delegate for relations with the liberal formations of the European Union (EU), is one of the members of the party's commission in charge of refounding Ciudadanos.

Born in Madrid in 1982, Adrián Vázquez arrived at the European Parliament in 2020 when the United Kingdom definitively left the EU. Specialized in international relations, his career in the European Parliament had begun long before as coordinator of the international agenda of Ciudadanos, at which time he managed to get the European liberal group to expel Convergència after the 3 percent corruption scandal.

Since his election as an MEP, he has been a spokesperson for Ciudadanos for agriculture, livestock and fishing issues, an area in which he is a negotiator for the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), and chairs the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs (JURI), which in May bet for withdrawing the credentials of Carles Puigdemont and the other pro-independence MEPs who fled from the Spanish courts.

Thus, in May it announced that the credentials of Puigdemont and MEPs Toni Comín, Clara Ponsatí (Junts) and Jordi Solé (ERC) could not be verified because the European Parliament had not received the necessary notification from the Central Electoral Board, since that the Spanish arbitration body, relying on the LOREG, previously requires the act of compliance with the Constitution in Congress. The pro-independence parliamentarians appealed, accusing Vázquez of partiality.

The new European spokesperson for Cs is also one of those responsible for the union of the French party En Marche! from Emmanuel Macron to the liberal family in the European Parliament that gave rise to the Renew Europe group, in which Ciudadanos is registered and which is the third group in the European Parliament.

Facing the new political course, Vázquez argues that the priorities that will set the course for the 'orange' delegation in the European Parliament, which held its first meeting yesterday, go through ensuring the "good management" of European aid in the framework of the crisis derived from the pandemic and the war in Ukraine. Likewise, they seek to defend the commitment to energy autonomy and climate transition to disassociate the bloc from dependence on Russia.

The new spokesman has also warned of the risk that some governments, such as in Hungary and Poland, use European funds to "shield authoritarian regimes" in these countries, for which the 'orange' delegation has set itself the objective of "defending the Rule of Law" that combats radicalization and exclusionary nationalisms.

Finally, Ciudadanos assures that "it will continue to defend the interests of Spaniards in Europe" because "Spain has the opportunity to establish itself as a strong voice in the global arena, one that defends its values and interests and makes them compatible with growth and prosperity ".
