A Petro security delegation is assaulted by FARC dissidents in northern Colombia

MADRID, 25 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Presidency of Colombia has reported that a security delegation of the president, Gustavo Petro, has been assaulted this Wednesday by a group of dissidents from the disappeared FARC guerrilla as they passed through the municipality of El Tarra, in the department of North of Santander.

A caravan made up of three vehicles, none of which included President Petro, was circulating along a road in the San Pablo sector while carrying out reconnaissance work when it was machine-gunned while approaching an illegal checkpoint made up of six people.

The vehicles ignored the signals to stop that were made to them from this improvised checkpoint, so they were shot "with long-range firearms," according to the Presidency statement.

"One of the vehicles did not manage to pass the checkpoint and another was punctured. Two vehicles and a driver from the National Protection Unit (UNP) were held there, who was later released," the statement continues.

The authorities have denied that they have disappeared and have reported that the event has ended without injuries or fatalities.

This delegation was carrying out reconnaissance work with a view to the trip that President Petro is scheduled to make this Friday to the municipality of El Tarra to attend a security council. Despite everything, Casa Nariño has ruled out that the trip will be cancelled.
