21 people die in Mali in an attack blamed on the Islamic State in the Great Sahara

MADRID, 9 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Malian Armed Forces have announced this Sunday night that 21 people have died as a result of an attack allegedly perpetrated by the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS) in the town of Ansongo, in the southeast of the country.

Among the deceased, 17 of them were soldiers, while the other four were civilians, as detailed in a statement by the Malian Army, adding that in the attack - carried out on Sunday - 22 other people were injured.

For its part, the Malian Army reportedly killed at least seven terrorists and wounded an unknown number of people.

"The Tessit units, in their mission to protect the population, reacted energetically to a complex attack coordinated by armed terrorist groups, most likely from the Islamic State in the Great Sahara," the Malian Army detailed in the letter.

"During the violent clashes in the town, the Malian Armed Forces showed professionalism and gave priority to the safety and protection of the population," he added.

The attack took place in the Gao region, which is located in what is known as the 'zone of the three borders', given that it borders Burkina Faso and Niger. This region of the country has been particularly shaken by jihadist attacks in recent years.
