Yolanda Díaz proposes reforming the Regulations of Congress to allow the use of co-official languages

MADRID, 2 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The leader of Sumar and acting second vice president of the Government, Yolanda Díaz, has opted to start the new legislature with a reform of the Regulations of Congress so that deputies can use the co-official languages: Catalan, Basque and Galician.

In statements to TVE collected by Europa Press, the PSOE government partner has conveyed that she would like this reform to take place because Spain is a country "of countries", "diverse" and "plural" in which "different identities" they deserve this "right".

Specifically, Sumar wants to recover the idea proposed last June to modify article 6 of the Regulation, which defines the rights of deputies and deputies, in order to "guarantee" that parliamentarians "can also express themselves in the official languages of their communities autonomous of origin", have specified formation sources, for whom the simultaneous interpretation of these three languages must also be provided in the Lower House.

Sumar gives the Senate as an example, where the use of Catalan, Basque and Galician is currently allowed in a partial way, limited to the presentation of writings, the General Commission of the Autonomous Communities and in the debate of motions.

"The new legislature must begin to guarantee that the official languages can also be used in Congress, protecting and giving visibility to the linguistic plurality of our country", the same sources have stated, recalling that the coalition government has already requested the use of the co-official languages in the European Parliament and after the first steps taken in the Senate.

Asked if it is a request from the Catalan and Basque parties to support the investiture of the socialist Pedro Sánchez, the vice president and acting Minister of Labor has made it clear that it is a "commitment" from Sumar that they bring from the electoral campaign.

Díaz has indicated that it would be "important", in view of the constitution of Congress on August 17, "to be able to express oneself" in the co-official languages.

"It is a model that has a constitutional fit. Diversity is greater wealth for our country, it would be very positive," he stressed, to indicate that they are going to submit it for debate with the parliamentary groups and with the PSOE to "improve and modernize" the Regulations, which in his opinion "should have already been reformed a long time ago".

A year ago, PSOE, PP, Vox and Ciudadanos refused to process a reform of the Congress Regulations to allow the general use of the co-official languages in the Chamber, so that Catalan, Galician and Basque could be used both in plenary as well as in the commissions, with the corresponding simultaneous translation, and that initiatives written in those languages can be registered.
