Victims and police unions warn that decriminalizing the glorification of terrorism means "unprotecting Spain"

They warn of the possible impact on the 41% of those convicted of jihadism and remember that public tributes to ETA members continue to be held

MADRID, 23 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Victims of Terrorism Association (AVT) and Dignity and Justice (DyJ) have warned together with Police and Civil Guard unions that decriminalizing the glorification of terrorism means "unprotecting Spain" due to its possible impact on 41% of those convicted. for crimes of jihadist terrorism and in the protection model for the group of victims, since public tributes to prisoners and former leaders of ETA are still being held.

Police Unions such as SUP and SPP and also the Civil Guard associations AEGC and ASES-GC criticize that Sumar has proposed in Congress to decriminalize a series of crimes because, according to the partner of the PSOE Government, "they clash with freedom of expression ", such as insults to the Crown, religion or the glorification of terrorism.

According to them, with the reform many behaviors related to jihadist terrorism run the risk of going unpunished, "since 41% of the sentences are for glorification." These are operations by individuals who launch proclamations on social networks, in what is considered the first step in the radicalization process that could end in a terrorist attack.

For this reason, these organizations denounce in a statement the "nonsense" of passing laws to sanction the glorification of Francoism to, in parallel, promote others that seek to decriminalize the glorification of terrorism, all this when tributes to members are still celebrated. of ETA in the streets of the Basque Country and Navarra.

Furthermore, they warn of the "regression of the protection model for victims of terrorism" and point to the PSOE despite the fact that it has said that it rejects the proposal regarding the glorification of terrorism. "We no longer trust this Government and this political formation, we don't believe anything," they say.

In this sense, they remember that they "lied" with the approaches to ETA prisoners by denying at first that it included those convicted of blood crimes or when they promised in May 2021 a reform of the Victim Protection Law, still pending.

The victims of terrorism remember that they have been demanding for some time a modification of article 578, which also penalizes the humiliation of victims of terrorism, so that the two behaviors are autonomously punished: on the one hand, the glorification of terrorists, and on the other, the humiliation of the victims.
