UNIFIL investigates an attack without victims against positions of its Spanish battalion in Lebanon

The United Nations Interim Force for Lebanon is investigating an attack against positions of its Spanish battalion in Lebanon that has left no victims to regret, its spokesperson, Andrea Tenenti, confirmed to the official Lebanese news agency NNA.

Later, UNIFIL confirmed the incident in a statement explaining that they are "investigating the origin of the shot" that hit a surveillance tower that was "within a UNIFIL position."

"The impact has caused damage to the structure. Fortunately, no one has been injured," indicated the UN mission, which recalls that "attacking UNIFIL positions and using the vicinity of our positions to launch attacks through "The Blue Line is unacceptable." "Attacks against civilians or UN personnel are a violation of International Law," she stressed.

"We remind the parties of their obligation to protect peacekeeping forces and avoid endangering the men and women working to restore stability," he added.

Likewise, he recalls the "two months of attacks along the Blue Line" that "increase the risk of a failure that could trigger a broader conflict." "Restoring stability through diplomatic channels is the priority to ensure the safety of all civilians living near the Blue Line, as well as peacekeeping forces," he added.

The incident occurred around 9:15 p.m. on Saturday in the eastern sector of the Abl el Qahm wheat plain, according to security sources to the newspaper 'L'Orient le Jour'.

Sources from the Lebanese news agency NNA point to an Israeli Merkava tank as responsible for the attack, although the mission's spokesperson has not confirmed this.

The Israeli Armed Forces have not commented on the incident, although they have reported several retaliatory attacks against Israeli territory in response to the launching of attacks and projectiles by the Lebanese militia party Hezbollah.
