Ukraine and Russia insist on their mutual suspicions about an imminent incident at the Zaporizhia power plant

MADRID, 5 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The governments of Ukraine and Russia have crossed again this Wednesday accusations about the alleged preparation of some kind of provocation at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, considered the largest in Europe and taken over by Russian troops since the beginning of March 2023, with warnings about the potential consequences of an alleged attack on these facilities.

The Kremlin spokesman, Dimitri Peskov, has acknowledged that the situation is "quite tense", since there is a "threat of sabotage" by the "Kiev regime". "It can have catastrophic consequences," he has warned the media, although he has guaranteed that "measures are being taken" to counter the threat, according to the Interfax news agency.

Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky already warned Tuesday of a possible "provocation", although he pointed to Russian forces. Ukrainian intelligence would have detected the placement of explosive devices on the roof of the plant, supposedly with a view to simulating a bombing that Moscow could later attribute to kyiv.

The Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister, Hanna Maliar, echoed this Wednesday in her Telegram account the risk of some kind of "terrorist act", assuming that a country like Russia is "capable of anything", no matter how " reckless" as it may seem. The authorities in the area have already begun preparations to anticipate a possible incident and have asked the population to trust only official sources for information.

Moscow and kyiv have already accused each other of partially destroying the Jakovka dam, which led to severe flooding on the banks of the Dnieper River. In fact, Peskov alluded to this case on Wednesday to expose what the Ukrainian forces would be willing to do for propaganda purposes.
