The UN hopes that the Rubiales case will mark "a turning point" in the fight against abuses in sport

MADRID, 29 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, has expressed his support for the Spanish soccer player Jennifer Hermoso on Tuesday and has advocated because of the scandal over the non-consensual kiss given to her by the now-suspended president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation ( RFEF), Luis Rubiales, suppose "a turning point" in the world of sport.

"Women in sport continue to face sexual harassment and abuse. We all have a responsibility to report and deal with these abuses," she said in a message on the X social network, formerly known as Twitter. "We join Jenni Hermoso and all those who work to end abuse and sexism in sport," she said, along with the 'hashtag'

For his part, the spokesman for the UN General Secretariat, Stéphane Dujarric, indicated at a press conference that "there is a critical problem of sexism that continues to exist in sport" and has shown the organization's desire that "the authorities and the Spanish government approach it in a way that respects the rights of all women athletes".

"How difficult is it not to kiss someone on the lips?" asked Dujarric, who declined to comment on whether Rubiales' actions amount to sexual assault. "That is a criminal term. From what we see, there are no indications that any of this was consented to," he has settled.

The words of Turk and Dujarric have come just a few days after UN Women criticized Rubiales' "totally unacceptable offensive comments and behavior" about the kiss to Hermoso at the World Cup celebration and defended "zero tolerance" against " any form of abuse or harassment" in women's sport.

For its part, the International Football Federation (FIFA), through its Disciplinary Commission, suspended Rubiales "provisionally" on Saturday "from all activities related to football at the national and international level." The suspension is effective from that same day and "extends for an initial period of 90 days," according to the agency, "as long as the disciplinary procedure is processed" that the Disciplinary Commission opened on August 24 against Rubiales as a result of of his behavior after the final of the women's World Cup.
