The TC inadmisses Ciudadanos' appeal against Puigdemont's candidacy for the Catalan elections

MADRID, 23 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Constitutional Court (TC) has agreed not to admit for processing the appeal for electoral protection presented by Ciudadanos against the candidacy of the former Catalan president and leader of Junts, Carles Puigdemont, for the Catalan elections on May 12, given the absence of violation of a fundamental right that can be protected by protection, the court of guarantees reported this Tuesday.

Ciudadanos reported in March of its intention to challenge the registration of the Junts leader in the electoral roll for the Catalan elections of May 12, considering it "fraudulent" for not residing in Catalonia.

The then general secretary of Ciudadanos, Adrián Vázquez, highlighted that Puigdemont, who left Catalonia in 2017 after the illegal October 1 referendum, "has been on the run in Belgium for seven years and without setting foot" in the autonomous community. "He no longer has the political status of Catalan, which disqualifies him from being a voter and being eligible," he added.

Ciudadanos alleged that the Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia states in its article 7 that to be a candidate in the regional elections one must enjoy the political status of Catalan. And to have it, you must be registered on the current electoral roll, in accordance with the Organic Law of the General Electoral Regime (LOREG).
