The Supreme Court confirms the sentences of up to 15 years for the 'Gürtel' plot for the Pope's visit to Valencia

MADRID, 10 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Supreme Court (TS) has confirmed the sentence handed down by the National Court (AN) in 2020 on 'Gürtel' for the Pope's visit to Valencia in July 2006 for the 19 defendants who were sentenced in this separate piece, including the ringleader of the plot, Francisco Correa, who received 13 years and 7 months, and his 'number two', Pablo Crespo, with 15 years and 5 months.

The ruling declared proven a corporate structure created by Correa to obtain illegal awarding of contracts from different administrations and public entities and, specifically, from the organization and operation of the so-called 'Grupo Correa' in Valencia, or Valencian branch, during the years 2004 to 2008, and previous actions aimed at obtaining the award of public contracts.

Among them, a series of actions aimed at obtaining the illegal award of the provision of services and supplies necessary for the development of said event, carrying out negotiations with the then Minister of Agriculture Juan Cotino, to obtain the award of the contract for rental supply of screens and sound systems.

The National Court determined that several of the defendants decided that the commission and the cost of entering into this contract for the supply of video screens, public address systems and sound should not be carried out directly by the V EMF Foundation, but by the public entity RTVV in favor of of a shell company --TECONSA--, which in turn subcontracted --when this was prohibited-- with the company Impacto Producciones.

The sentence sentenced 19 of the 23 defendants for different crimes of prevarication, embezzlement, fraud against the administration, false official documents, money laundering and crimes against the Public Treasury, some as perpetrators, others as necessary collaborators, and others as accomplices. . Of them, only seven appealed the ruling of the National Court, which is now fully ratified by the Supreme Court.
