The Parliament of Portugal approves an amnesty law for young people except for crimes considered serious

MADRID, 18 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Portuguese Parliament has approved an amnesty law for young people between the ages of 16 and 30 for crimes committed until June 19, except for those considered serious.

The law includes a pardon for all sentences of up to eight years in prison, and those criminal offenses that do not exceed a year in prison or a 120-day fine will be forgiven, as reported by 'Diário de Notícias'.

The bill was approved by the Portuguese Government on June 19 due to the forthcoming visit of Pope Francis to the country for the celebration of World Youth Day.

The crimes excluded in the amendments to the amnesty law are organ trafficking, theft, crimes against national sovereignty and against the application of the rule of law, prisoner riots, corruption in the private sector and in commerce. international, against sports truth, fraud in obtaining subsidies and crimes against children, young people and other vulnerable people.

In addition, the bill already included other exceptions such as the crimes of homicide, infanticide, domestic violence, mistreatment, serious offense to physical integrity, female genital mutilation, forced marriage, kidnapping, against sexual freedom, extortion, incitement to hate, discrimination, violence, influence peddling, money laundering or corruption.
